However, I am willing to set aside some of my fears for the sake of attempting to bring "culture" (as my husband would say) into our boys' lives. So, in an effort to do so, we had a frog searching adventure this afternoon in our backyard. Boy oh boy!! Did we ever find frogs!!! There must have been DOZENS of them!! Big ones, little ones, brown ones and green ones!
Mr. T had the time of his life chasing and catching them, (and, I might also add, with utmost care as to not hurt them!)! He even whispered to them to summon them. I love watching him in action!
All the while, our one year old was also frog hunting in his own "special way" -- let's just say that gentleness does not come quickly or naturally to him...some day, perhaps. Needless to say, he was not allowed to hold them (or even admire them too closely). His way of frog hunting involved him LOUDLY calling for the frogs (in his husky baby voice), "AHHGIEEESS, AHHGIEEES". The poor frogs around him must have been quite disturbed upon his approach.
I will admit, I did come in close contact with a few frogs myself in order to help our 3 year old catch them. They really are cold to the touch and their webbed feet are rather on the sticky side of things, I did, however, manage to savor this special moment with the boys as they discovered the new world of froggy friends. I think it's safe to say that my husband will be so proud! :)

Next up ... snakes.
Oh no, no!!! I draw the line at frogs! In fact, the line is a very short line that begins and ends with frogs!! Nice try!! :)
Way to Go!! You're better than me... we have a ton of frogs in our backyard too and I leave the catching up to Emma. :) Fortunately, Jeff showed her how to do it once and she's now pretty good at it! I was laughing about Preston though - that is EXACTLY what Luke did last year. He would also try to stomp on them when he wasn't able to catch them. :) Ah, boys.
They are so little! The ones I see around here are a big porkier. Yuck.
Great pics of the boys - look at those pudgy little hands. So sweet.
so brave! i'm proud of you! it can be hard to get over our own 'willies' about things, but when it means bringing that priceless joy and wonder to our children, it's SO worth it! i used to catch snakes with my brother as a kid, and i'd prefer frogs to bugs, but we don't have frogs here, so lucy goes after our 6- and 8-legged friends. yuck!
You need my husband to help you find the snakes. Lydie touched her first snake before her first birthday. With a wildlife biologist you never know what my come into our house. It took me a while to get used to it. I'm still a wimp with most animals, but I'm coming along.
I'm sure the boys had a ball!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh...Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Do you get my point??? Ooo, yuck, etc! Way to go Mommy! You helping T catch frogs is sort of like me cutting a banana for my kids. You do the things you hate the most for the good of the kids. Wyatt handed me a tiny spider today and said, "What's that, Mommy?" I nearly freaked out as I smooshed it dead. Then I felt badly that I acted like that in front of him. I'll keep trying, though! ~Shan
